The story of Marianas Trench begins like most bands: Josh Ramsay and Matt Webb were high school friends that found chemistry in music, and shortly became band mates. Soon after signing with 604 Records in 2003, the two found themselves without a drummer and a bass player. Then add Ian Casselman and Mike Ayley into the equation, and that is what consists of the Marianas Trench that we know today.
After signing with 604 Records and finding the rest of their band, Marianas Trench worked hard in building up their resumes and fan base, slotting whatever small shows they could and honing their craft. What resulted from all that hard work was the release of their debut full-length album, titled Fix Me, in 2006. But it is through their sophomore effort, Masterpiece Theatre, released early this year that really shows the potential that the band has.
Masterpiece Theatre includes a crafted blend of infectious upbeat tracks (Cross My Heart, All to Myself) to softer ballads (Good To You, Beside You), which not only displays the band’s musical diversity, but also flatteringly showcases their vocal abilities. One of the most outstanding tracks on the album is ‘Lover Dearest’, which is a reflection of lead singer Josh’s past struggles with addiction. Like a goodbye letter to a former lover, the lyrics in the song tug at the heartstrings through the struggles deeply cemented into the words and notes of the song.
Marianas Trench is formed by a talented quartet of gentlemen, and their live shows also deserve some credit. They are currently on a cross-Canada tour, heading from East to West. For more information, check out their Myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/marianastrench.
