If you are looking for a band that genuinely sticks out as something unique in the music industry, one with relatable and thought-provoking lyrics, and one that has the ability to make you forget all your troubles and just “be in the moment,” look no further than Jets Overhead. The five-person team from Victoria, BC, have quite the eclectic sound, not only through their instrumentals, but with their tandem of lead vocalists and married couple, Adam Kittredge and Antonia Freybe-Smith. Remaining band members, Jocelyn Greenwood (Bass/Guitar), Piers Henwood (Guitar/Keyboards), and Luke Renshaw (Drums/Vocals), complete the unisex band that is seemingly gaining popularity by the day.
The newest album from Jets Overhead, No Nations, was released this past summer and features an array of songs that are excellent tunes for an escape, a full-blown acidic trip, or if you just want to kick back and let the music take over. Jets Overhead, who were nominated for the 2007 Juno for “Best New Group of the Year,” have jammed amongst some world-class acts in the past couple of years including attending the 2009 Bonnaroo festival with acts such as Nine Inch Nails, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, the Beastie Boys, Paul Oakenfold, Santigold, and Ben Harper among others. If that isn’t enough, Jets Overhead has also toured alongside Our Lady Peace, The Dandy Warhols, Broken Social Scene, and Sam Roberts.
In addition to having the ability to boast truly great music, the humility and hard-work the band displays is truly a statement of its own. We here at asapmusicblog were fortunate enough to attend a live performance by Jets Overhead on November 7th at the Commodore here in Vancouver, and were honestly blown away by their wonderful and energetic performance. Even taking a few minutes to explore the band’s website is quite the treat as the members post journals updated with hilarious backstage moments and great pictures that most artists don’t bother on sharing. Jets Overhead remains one of the few bands to embrace the changing times when the internet has allowed for music to be downloaded illegally, offering to post free downloads, or by donation downloads, of their EP and selected songs on their website, knowing that regardless of the precautions, in this day and age, sadly many people do steal music. However, if it is any consolidation, Jets Overhead should feel pretty confident that their music is worth people coming back to purchase the songs and album.
Jets Overhead has been classified under headings such as “Indie, Alternative, and Psychedelic Rock,” but really those labels aren’t necessarily as important as is the fact they just make pretty darn good music that everyone can listen to and enjoy listening to. They are a band who formed truly for the love of creating music and telling stories through their music, and are doing just that. It is not a stretch to say that we need more bands that are as committed to making good music while being down-to-earth individuals at the same time as Jets Overhead is, but they are doing a good job in making up for the lack of artists who fit that bill. No Nations is available in stores and on iTunes now, and be sure to check out the band opening for Lights in a city near you.
