There is something about music that speaks to the heart and soul unlike anything else. There is no better event than #SingItFwd to showcase this fact. Last Thursday at the Vogue Theatre, a packed roster of Canadian musicians as well as the youngsters of Saint James Music Academy graced the stage.
Bend Sinister kicked the night off with an energetic set and were joined by the SJMA choir during their set. Tamara Stanners of 102.7 The Peak and Cory Ashworth had the hosting duties of the evening, bringing a charismatic and honest vibe to the stage between songs.聽In addition to a set with his own band, Jordan Klassen delighted the crowd with a duet during Dear Rouge‘s set as well as starring in the lighthearted documentary of his visit to the SJMA.
There were many highlights during the evening, including Four On The Floor accompanying Dear Rouge’s set, a young member of the SJMA performing a sweet rendition of Mulan’s “Reflection”, and surprise guest Hannah Georgas performing a set which included her cover of Rihanna’s “Stay”. Electronic duo Bear Mountain were impressive without their usual set-up with their laptops, as the acoustic rendition of “Congo” was a treat to hear to live with the choir replicating the synth beats in the chorus.
Following the intermission, The Harpoonist and The Axe Murderer hit the stage with Miss Quincy with their blend of gritty blues. July Talk rocked the theatre with an energetic set with Leah Fay leading the kids of the SJMA in a dance-off during “Paper Girl”. k-os and Hey Ocean! wrapped the evening up, and all of the artists returned on stage to perform Queen’s “Somebody To Love” together.
Throughout the night, it was endearing to see the interactions between the artists with the kids from the music academy, as we all have moments where we can remember the ways that music has affected us from a young age. #SingItFwd reminds us all about this impact and how we can pass it on.
