The Ruffled Feathers have had a busy year so far. It started with a show at the Biltmore Cabaret at the beginning of January and the band has continued to build on their successes through their six-year history. The chamber-pop band consists of Gina Loes (vocals, guitar, ukulele), Andrew Lee (horn section, vocals), Sam MacKinnon (drums), Molly MacKinnon (violin), Sophia Xiang (piano), and Paolo Brian (bass).
The accomplishments of The Ruffled Feathers so far this year include an appearance in the Top 10 Regional Finals of CBC’s Searchlight Competition, a steady appearance on CBC Radio 3’s Top 30 chart, and the release of their EP, Bottom of the Blue (released in June). Exploring the themes of impermanence, separation, and reconciliation, the band interweaves the four songs on the EP with an underlying sense of hope.
Loes’ haunting yet inspiriting vocals shine particularly on “Little Sister”, a song that is as reflective as it is perceptive. The band succeeds in their efforts to draw from genres of the classical era while maintaining a modern feel, as inspired elements fit their brand of music well. The intricacies of The Ruffled Feather’s musical arrangements are showcased even better in their live show.
The Ruffled Feathers will be playing in Vancouver on September 6th at the Korean Community Centre as part of the Project Limelight fundraiser.
