In a time where sometimes being a musical artist doesn’t necessarily require talent nor strive, it is easy to see why giving up seems to be an option for some. Record deals seem to be handed to Disney stars and starlets left and right, often enhanced with pitch correctors, and songwriting credits given for a few words here and there. But in the mist of all that, there are many unsigned artists out there who leave us wondering how they remain unsigned. Trainlight is a band that fits that description perfectly.

Trainlight is based in Collingwood, Ontario, though half the band is actually from neighbouring cities. Led by lead vocalist and keyboardist Christian Ferraro, the rest of the band includes drummer Dave Arkwright, bassist Pierce Pimiskern, and guitarist Jordan Logan. While most people in their age range are at the end of their post-secondary careers or beginning to settle into full-time work, the band realized that they wanted to experience the music thing in entirety.

Fueled by McDonald’s, determination, and the hopes of getting their music out there, Trainlight set out on cross-Canada this past summer, booking all 50 of their own shows from Ontario to Nova Scotia without any money or backing. Just their van and strive. The band also independently released a new album in July, titled ‘Now You’re Alone With Ghosts’. Their electro-edgy-pop-rock sound draws influences from the likes of Coldplay, U2, John Mayer, and The Midway State. Trainlight’s music is like poetry in motion; Ferraro’s vocals are full of raw emotion and reflect the stories of heartache, love, and such in their songs quite accordingly.

Though the band is currently playing shows mostly in their home province Ontario, hopefully it will be sooner than later that they will be able to reach over to the West Coast. But until then, Trainlight will be continuing in their musical journey, building their fanbase, one song at a time.
