#musicmonday Artist Feature – MEAGHAN SMITH

Artist FeatureHometown: Halifax, NS | Label: Sire Records

The term ‘vintage’ is often used to describe things such as clothing or furniture, but in present time, bringing back elements of the past seems to be as acceptable as it is popular. Meaghan Smith’s music takes vintage elements from the big band orchestra-backed eras of the 1920’s and 30’s, but pulls it off in a style that is her very own. Meaghan Smith modern-vintage.

After moving to Halifax, Nova Scotia from her hometown in Ontario, Meaghan Smith was settling into a career in animation before realizing that her dreams of being a musician were becoming eminent. Smith started playing shows locally, resulting in overcoming her initial fear of performing in front of an audience. Although music was always a huge part of her childhood growing up, it was at this point that Smith realized that it was what she was meant to do.

The result of her perseverance, dedication, and savings was her debut album, A Cricket’s Orchestra, released last October, which Smith financially supported herself prior to being picked up by a major label. A few of the tracks off the album were released as a four-song EP back in 2008, including ‘I Know’, which adoringly details the magic in the difficult and indescribable feelings of love. It is in the honesty and simplicity of Smith’s music and lyrics, which sets her apart from the vast sea of singer-songwriters.

Summer seems to be a good season for Smith, as she garnered attention last year with her cover of Pixies’ ‘Here Comes Your Man’, which was featured prominently on the 500 Days of Summer soundtrack. It is becoming increasingly rare to have an artist who lives up to the quality of their studio recordings, and Meaghan Smith is definitely one of those exceptions.

Looking ahead at her schedule for this summer, Smith will be touring as part of the Lilith Fair revival, and will undoubtedly be charming audiences all over North America with her tunes.
