STRING FLING II, Rio Theatre – February 6, 2014

There was magic in the air at the Rio Theatre last Thursday night. By magic, I mean a group of wonderfully talented individuals including the Four on the Floor quartet and an array of local musicians creating musical euphoria. The evening was tied together by strings, and certainly left the audience wanting more.

With a stacked list of performers that included Brandon Scott (Yukon Blonde), Tonye Aganaba, Jay Malinowski (Bedouin Soundclash), Laura Smith (Rococode), Ryan Guldemond (Mother Mother), and Steve Bays and Parker Bossley (Fur Trade) – the night was representative of the level of talents the local music scene in Vancouver holds.

Highlights of the evening included the projections by Mind of a Snail that backed each of the performances beautifully, as detailed by the pictures below. Other moments included the soaring vocals of Tonye Aganaba, who rounded off her three-song set list with a cover of Rihanna’s “Diamonds”, and of course, the live performance debut of Fur Trade, the last performers of the night who brought the crowd to their feet.

Four on the Floor, consisting of Michelle Faehrmann (cello), Elliot Vaughn (viola), Stephanie Chatman (violin) and Emily Bach (violin), shined as a collective. The passion for their craft showed on stage, and it’s safe to assume that those in attendance left with a greater appreciation for the musical magic that string instruments can bring. Though the event is still fresh on the mind, I am already looking forward to next year’s String Fling, and the collaborations to come.
