Whether it’s in her songwriting, live performances, or just her presence—Kate Yahn emits the energy and aura of a modern rock ‘n’ roll storyteller.
This is especially true after listening to her latest single, “Edge of Nothing (Take Me Home)“, especially with the rock-pop synths. It’s been a busy year for Kate so far—in addition to new music, she secured a 2023 NXNE showcase in Toronto earlier this year and has even more exciting live shows lined up (more on that later).
Read ahead to learn more about Kate in her own words.
Q: Introduce yourself!
Kate Yahn: Hey! My name is Kate, not Katherine, or Kaitlyn—just Kate. I grew up in Tsawwassen where I pursued musical theatre, bringing me to train in Toronto and New York until COVID, when I decided to pursue my music project. After moving around for training, I have finally settled into my dream apartment in the West End [of Vancouver] with the sweetest roommate—a cat named Rosie.
Q: How would you describe your music to a first-time listener?
KY: I went into making this record wanting it to feel nostalgic, bittersweet, and something timeless. There’s a truthful emotionality and earnestness that I hope invites the listener to reflect on their own life. It’s folky, but modern with lots of catchy melodies and alternative rock influences.
Q: What is your favourite music venue in Vancouver?
KY: My all-time favourite is Guilt & Co. Not only is it a beautiful space [with] the best cocktails, but the STAFF have become family to me. Nothing feels better than getting to play in a space where you’re so loved and supported. It’s radiating in the walls.
Q: If someone is listening to you for the first time, which song would you recommend they start with?
KY: I think a song that so clearly shows what it is to come see me and band live would be “Edge of Nothing (Take Me Home)”. But in all honesty, the song where my voice truly lives is in an unreleased song called “Back To You”.
Q: What was the last live show you attended?
KY: The last show I attended was in Toronto in a club called Lee’s Palace. Felt like a full circle moment as it was right beside my first apartment when I was 17. I saw Vancouver local Haley Blais supported by Georgia Harmer.
